In 1791, as part of a restructuring following John Wesleys death, Methodist circuits were grouped into districts, analogous to Anglican dioceses. In the decades following statehood, the largest religious groups in Illinois were the Methodist, Episcopal, Baptist, and Presbyterian churches.
